On capital punishments

This is an extremely touchy issue.. what with the States having just carried out the 1000th execution since 1977 and Singapore having just executed Vietnamese drug trafficker Nguyen.


Personally, I'm pretty neutral to capital punishment. I mean, it is kind of hard to feel sorry for those hardened criminals who commit acts of terrible brutality and all...


But sometimes, the mass media tends to portray the criminal as someone real.. a brother, a son, a father, a friend. Someone like the average Joe. Someone like us. Someone with a real and nice life. Someone with a heart.


And then it gets hard... to see someone with the words "condemned" written all over his face. And then see his mother, and his twin brother, the one with the same facial features as him.


Sometimes it feels cruel.. one minute you see him alive and kicking, and the next he's dead, life snuffed out, legally. How does it feel... to be literally walking to your death.. walking towards the noose that's about to circle your neck.. How does it feel as the black cloth covers your head, the noose gets tighter and tighter, and the floor opens beneath your feet. And then you struggle to breath, but it gets harder and harder. Apparently, your spinal cord will break under the sudden pressure as you fall when the ground opens. And that's what kills you.


And so he dies.


And as the undertaker removes the body from the noose, he will release his final breath in one long howl of agony.


And then I wonder, how does his closed ones feel... as the time comes and the clock strikes, to be somewhere else, knowing your loved one is being executed. The pain... oh the pain.


And when you think about it, executions are not that rare in here.. in fact, it is the country with the highest execution rate for this small population size.


OK I think I should stop here.. sensitive issue.
